Backkr Limited ("Backkr", "we", "us", or "our") operates Handshake by Backkr ("Handshake" or "Platform"), a free professional community for consultants, freelancers, service providers, and business owners to network, share insights, collaborate, and create business opportunities.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information you provide when you join or participate in Handshake. By joining or using Handshake, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Platform.

1. What Is Handshake?

Handshake is a free, open professional community for:

  • Consultants and freelancers seeking clients or collaborations
  • Service-based business owners growing their networks
  • Entrepreneurs, makers, and small business owners
  • Marketing and business professionals sharing expertise
  • Anyone interested in professional networking and business development

Handshake is invitation-based or open to professionals who meet basic membership criteria. There is no affiliation required with Backkr Limited or its SaaS products to participate. Backkr operates Handshake as a community platform to foster professional connections and collaboration.

2. Information We Collect

When you join Handshake, we collect:

  • Your name and email address
  • Your professional title, industry, and services/expertise
  • Your business name and location (optional)
  • Your business website or social media links (optional)
  • Any profile bio or description you provide
  • Messages, posts, introductions, and other contributions you make in the community

Handshake operates via a third-party platform (Lovable), we may also receive:

  • Your username and profile information on that platform
  • Your interactions, activity, and engagement within the Handshake workspace
  • Any files, portfolios, or content you share with other members

Handshake does not require you to share sensitive business information, financial details, or confidential client information.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Operate, maintain, and improve the Handshake Platform
  • Connect you with other professionals and facilitate introductions for future business
  • Send you platform updates, member announcements, and community news
  • Highlight member profiles and expertise within the community
  • Respond to your questions and support requests
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or Terms of Service violations
  • Comply with legal obligations
  • Latest free webinar opportunities and Backkr (SaaS) updates

4. Member Profiles and Community Visibility

Your profile (name, title, expertise, bio, and business description) is visible to other Handshake members for the purpose of professional networking. This allows members to:

  • Discover professionals in your field
  • Identify collaboration or referral opportunities
  • Connect directly with you for business inquiries

You have control over what information appears on your public profile. Do not share confidential business information, client names, pricing details, or personal information you are uncomfortable making visible to other professionals. You are responsible for the information you publish.

5. Community Discussions and Shared Content

Messages, posts, and discussions within Handshake are visible to other community members. Handshake is designed for professional collaboration, so assume all content is visible to other professionals. You are solely responsible for:

  • Not sharing confidential, sensitive, or proprietary information
  • Respecting other members' intellectual property and privacy
  • Complying with all applicable laws in your posts and interactions
  • Not posting illegal content, spam, or harmful material

Backkr may moderate or remove content that violates community guidelines but does not monitor all discussions in real time.

6. Direct Connections and Off-Platform Communication

Handshake facilitates introductions and connections between members. Once connected, members may communicate directly via email, phone, video call, or other channels outside the Platform. Backkr is not responsible for:

  • Content of private communications between members
  • Business agreements, contracts, or transactions between members
  • Disputes, misrepresentations, or fraud involving member-to-member transactions

Members engage at their own risk and should exercise due diligence when entering business relationships through Handshake.

7. Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or rent member data to third parties. We may share information in the following circumstances:

  • With other Handshake members as part of your public profile and community interactions
  • With third-party platforms if Handshake operates on that platform (e.g., Lovable stores data on its servers)
  • With Backkr team members who administer, moderate, or support the Platform
  • If required by law, court order, or government authority
  • If necessary to protect the safety, rights, or property of Backkr, our team, or community members

Handshake members are not identified in Backkr's external marketing, case studies, or promotional materials without explicit written permission. Backkr often references the existence of Handshake as a community initiative and for marketing purposes.

8. Third-Party Platforms

Handshake operates via a third-party platform (Lovable.com), that platform's privacy policy also applies to your data. Backkr is not responsible for third-party platform data handling practices, security breaches, or terms changes. Please review the third-party platform's privacy policy and terms to understand how your data is stored, accessed, and used.

You are responsible for any information you store on third-party platforms and should take precautions to protect sensitive data.

9. Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your member profile and community activity as long as your account is active. You may delete your Handshake account at any time. Upon deletion:

  • Your profile will be removed from search and discovery
  • Your membership will be terminated
  • Your personal data will be deleted within 30 days
  • Posts, discussions, or content you have shared may remain in community records (as posted) unless you request specific removal

Email records and support communications may be retained for administrative and legal purposes for up to 2 years.

10. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on your location, you have the following rights:

New Zealand (Privacy Act 2020)

  • Right to access your personal information
  • Right to correct inaccurate information
  • Right to request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Right to complain to the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz

Australia (Privacy Act 1988)

  • Right to access and correct your personal information
  • Right to request deletion of your account
  • Right to complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au

United Kingdom & EEA (GDPR)

  • Right to erasure (deletion)
  • Right to restriction of processing

11. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including:

  • Regular security monitoring and updates
  • Data minimisation – we collect only what is necessary

However, no method of electronic transmission is 100% secure. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for protecting sensitive information you choose to share. Backkr is not liable for unauthorised access resulting from your failure to secure your credentials.

12. Data Breach Notification

In the event of a data breach, Backkr will take the following steps:

  • Assessment and Containment: We will immediately assess the nature and scope of the breach and take steps to contain it to prevent further unauthorized access or disclosure.
  • Notification to Affected Users: If a data breach is likely to result in a high risk to your rights and freedoms, we will notify affected users via email without undue delay, providing information about the breach, the likely consequences, and the measures taken or proposed to be taken to address it. This notification will include advice on steps you can take to protect yourself from potential harm.
  • Notification to Authorities: We will notify relevant regulatory authorities (e.g., the New Zealand Privacy Commissioner) as required by applicable law.
  • Mitigation of Harm: We will take all reasonable steps to mitigate any potential harm resulting from the breach, including offering support and guidance to affected individuals.
  • Third-Party Platform Coordination: As Handshake operates via Lovable, we will coordinate with Lovable to follow their established data breach procedures, ensuring their systems are secured and any data stored on their platform is protected. This may involve deleting affected databases or taking other necessary actions as per Lovable's protocols.

13. Children's Privacy

Handshake is intended for professionals 18 years of age and older. We do not knowingly collect information from minors. If you believe a minor has joined or provided information to Handshake, please contact team@backkr.com and we will remove them promptly.

14. Content Moderation and Acceptable Use

Handshake members agree to:

  • Treat other members with respect and professionalism
  • Not post spam, advertising, or unsolicited promotional content
  • Not engage in harassment, discrimination, or abusive behavior
  • Not share illegal content, malware, or phishing links
  • Not impersonate others or misrepresent credentials or experience
  • Not use Handshake for illegal purposes or to facilitate scams

Backkr reserves the right to remove members, delete posts, or suspend access for violations of community guidelines. Serious violations may be reported to appropriate authorities.

15. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. Material changes will be communicated via email or posted on our Platform. Continued use of Handshake after updates constitutes acceptance of revised terms.
