AI Search Visibility for NZ Businesses: How to Get Found on ChatGPT
Search did not die – it changed shape. A growing share of New Zealand buyers now ask an assistant instead of scanning ten blue links. If your business is not in that answer, you are invisible at the exact moment intent is highest.
How AI assistants actually pick businesses
Three inputs decide whether you get named:
- Crawlable content on your own site. If the answer only exists in a PDF, an image, or a video, it may as well not exist.
- Consistency across the web. Your name, service list, region and contact details need to match on your site, in directories, and on partner pages. Contradictions make you a risky recommendation.
- Third-party corroboration. Assistants prefer businesses that other sources talk about. Local media, industry directories, supplier pages and genuine reviews all count.
Write answers, not articles
The single highest-leverage change is structural. For each question a customer actually asks, publish the question as a heading and answer it in forty to sixty words directly underneath. Then expand. Assistants lift concise, self-contained answers – rambling introductions get skipped.
Good NZ examples:
-
"How much does a marketing platform cost in New Zealand?"
-
"Do I need a marketing agency or software?"
-
"What is the best way to get leads for a Christchurch trades business?"
Make your NZ context explicit
Models do not infer that you serve Tauranga because your office is there. Say it. Name regions, suburbs and service areas in body copy, not just the footer. Use NZD pricing, NZ spelling and local references. This also helps you win queries that include "nz", which are far less competitive than global terms.
Structured data still matters
Schema markup is machine-readable context. At minimum, mark up your organisation, your services, your FAQs and any pricing. It does not guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity, and ambiguity is what gets you left out.
Get mentioned where models already look
You cannot control training data, but you can control your footprint:
-
Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
-
Get listed in credible NZ industry directories
-
Pitch a genuine story to a trade publication or local outlet
-
Ask partners and suppliers for a real page mention, not a footer link
-
Encourage reviews that describe the specific service and location
Measure it like a grown-up
You cannot see rankings in a chat interface, so measure by proxy:
-
Ask the assistants your top ten buying questions monthly and log whether you appear
-
Watch referral traffic from AI sources in analytics
-
Track branded search volume – AI discovery often shows up as people searching your name later
The uncomfortable truth
AI visibility rewards businesses that have said something specific, in public, that can be verified. There is no shortcut and no keyword trick. Publish real answers, keep your details consistent, and earn mentions. That is the work.
