How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Business

Reviews decide who gets called. Here is how to ask so people actually leave one, when to ask, and what to do about the bad ones.

What is the best way to get more Google reviews?

Ask individually, on the day the customer is happiest, with a direct link that opens the review box in one tap. Personal requests from a real person convert far better than automated batches, and recent reviews matter more than total count.

What is the best way to get more Google reviews?

Ask individually, on the day the customer is happiest, with a direct link that opens the review box in one tap. Personal requests from a real person convert far better than automated batches, and recent reviews matter more than total count.

Reviews are the closest thing small business marketing has to a cheat code. They influence local rankings, they are the first thing a buyer checks, and increasingly they are what AI assistants summarise when someone asks for a recommendation.

Most businesses have too few, and the ones they have are old.

Get your one-tap link first

In your Google Business Profile there is a short review link. Copy it, shorten it, and save it somewhere you can paste in three seconds. Every extra step between asking and reviewing costs you roughly half the responses.

Put it in:

  • Your email signature.
  • The final message of every job.
  • Invoices and receipts.
  • A QR code at the counter or in the van.

Ask at the peak, not at the end of the month

The best moment is the instant the customer expresses satisfaction. "So glad that worked out" is the cue. Ask then, not in a batch email three weeks later.

For longer projects, the peak is handover day. For repeat services, it is after the second or third good experience.

Ask like a human

Compare these:

  • "Please leave us a review." Ignored.
  • "Hi Sam - really glad the deck turned out how you wanted. If you've got 30 seconds, a quick Google review helps other people in Hamilton find us. Here's the link." Works.

Name, specific reference, reason it helps, tiny time commitment, direct link.

Make it someone's job

Pick a number - five requests a week - and give it to one person. Reviews arrive when asking is a habit, not a campaign.

Reply to every single one

Reply to the good ones briefly and specifically. Reply to the bad ones calmly, publicly, once: acknowledge, explain what you have changed, offer to take it offline.

The reply is not for the reviewer. It is for the next twenty people reading.

Handle negative reviews properly

A perfect five-star profile reads as fake. A 4.7 with thoughtful replies reads as real.

If a review is false or abusive, report it. If it is fair, fix the thing. If it is a misunderstanding, correct it politely and move on. Never argue publicly. Nobody has ever won that.

What not to do

  • Do not offer discounts or prizes for reviews. It breaches Google's policies and it shows.
  • Do not write them yourself. Patterns are obvious to readers and to Google.
  • Do not gate reviews by only asking happy people through a filter form. That is against the rules too.
  • Do not buy them. Ever.

Keep them fresh

Recency matters. A steady trickle of two or three a month is worth more than thirty collected in one panic week last year. Build the ask into your delivery process so it never stops.

Use them everywhere else

Reviews are content. Pull the best lines onto your homepage, your quotes, your proposals and your ads. A sentence a customer wrote will always outperform a sentence you wrote about yourself.

A real example

A physio clinic had 14 reviews, the newest one two years old. They added a QR card at reception, asked at the end of the third session, and replied to every review within a day.

Ninety days later: 61 reviews, an average of 4.8, and a noticeable lift in calls that started with "you came up first."

Where Backkr fits

Backkr shows you which enquiries came from local search and what those people were looking for, so you can see the reviews working - and fix the pages they land on next.
